The second weekend of May is a reminder of our progress through life. This is the weekend that we celebrate our Mom’s with Mother’s Day and most Universities and Colleges hold graduation. Both celebrations represent who we are as a culture of family and opportunity.
If you google “The American Dream” you will get the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams in 1931,
“life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth”
The American Dream has been imagined and established by those original immigrants and built on again and again as new immigrants and new generations of Americans emerge. My version of the American Dream is wanting an opportunity to create a better place for my family.
Today, my family celebrates an anniversary of The American Dream. Five years ago, we celebrated a dream that many Americans hold as we attended and participated in three graduations; a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree, and a Doctorate degree. All three daughters achieving and launching themselves forward into the next stage of their life.
As a parent, I watched proudly as they each received their diploma with their named called before walking proudly across the stage. At that moment, they each grabbed hold of the American Dream.
I believe that many today think that this American Dream is about how large is my house, how fancy is my car and a guarantee that I will have more tomorrow. These material things are the products of achieving the American Dream, but they are not the American Dream.
We have confused opportunity with material success.
The American Dream is not about material things and requires constant and continuing growth. Growth does not come without effort. It also includes failures and successes.
Happy Mother’s Day and thanks Mom for allowing me to build my American Dream and open the door for my children to find their American Dream.
